Summer Rescue Remedy featuring Watermelon "Xigua"

Discover the refreshing benefits of Watermelon or also known as “Xigua”. It is far more than just a delicious summer fruit, watermelon is highly regarded in Chinese medicine for its hydrating and cooling properties. As an acupuncturist, I recognize food as a potent form of medicine—capable of profoundly impacting our health. Watermelon is particularly valuable during the hot months for its ability to cool the body, hydrate, and aid in detoxification! It's believed that this sweet fruit can benefit the Qi and Yin energy in the body, which helps to balance internal temperature and regulate bodily fluids. This is particularly important as Summer is associated with the Fire element, which corresponds to the Heart and Small Intestine organs. It is believed that during this season, the body's energy, or Qi, is at its peak, and it is important to maintain a balance to prevent imbalances. So, if you're feeling parched and dehydrated, reach for some juicy watermelon slices to quench your thirst and nourish your body. The high water content and natural sugars in watermelon make it a tasty and refreshing way to hydrate, especially during the scorching summer heat! Enjoy this juicy treat and appreciate the array of health benefits it brings each time you indulge!



Frozen Watermelon Cooler:

1kg (around ½ watermelon) watermelon flesh (chopped)

Juice of 1 lime

Lime zest


INSTRUCTIONS

Place the watermelon, lime juice and zest into a food processor /blender and blend until smooth.

Transfer the mixture to a shallow, freezable container and place in freezer.

After two hours, gently scrape the top layer with a spoon. Once you get to the unfrozen mixture pop it back in the freezer. Repeat after another 2 hours.

Freeze until solid (around 6 hours depending on surface area of container)

Scrape with a spoon and serve
